How to Prepare for Breastfeeding During Pregnancy: 3 Essential Tips for New Moms

While your body is transitioning into the beginning stages of milk production, there are ways to prepare for breastfeeding during pregnancy that can improve the outcomes and initiation of breastfeeding.  Here are three tips to help you feel more confident and prepared as you begin your journey.

  • Mental Preparation for Breastfeeding: Mindset preparation and managing your expectations are some of the most important ways to prepare for breastfeeding.  Begin by understanding that breastfeeding will be a learning process for both you and your baby.  It is very common for breastfeeding to feel unnatural at first and it may take some time to find your rhythm, but staying consistent will pay off.  Be patient and give yourself plenty of grace.
  • Education and Building Your Breastfeeding Support System: During your prenatal visits, make it a point to discuss breastfeeding with your OBGYN.  They can provide breastfeeding education and resources to support your journey.  If they don’t, don’t hesitate to ask.  Advocate for yourself and the experience you hope to have.  Take full advantage of the resources provided.  Learn the basics of breastfeeding, some key topics to learn include knowing what a good latch looks and feels like, as well as understanding your baby’s hunger and feeding cues.  Build your support system in advance, identify where you can find IBCLCs in your area if they are ever needed.  There are resources available, including programs through Women, Infant and Children (WIC) that offer peer counseling and basic breastfeeding guidance.  If it’s helpful, below I’ve included a free breastfeeding hotline through my lactation peer counseling program as an additional source of support.
  • Supportive Breastfeeding Environment: Create a designated breastfeeding environment that feels calm and peaceful; this can make a positive impact in your overall breastfeeding experience.  What you’re doing for your baby is meaningful and it’s not always easy. You deserve to create space that allows you to feel at ease to focus on nourishing your baby.

You don’t need to have it all figured out right away.  There will be challenges and doubts, but stay consistent and there will be a turning point where things feel easier and more natural. Take it one moment at a time and lean into the support you have.  You and your baby will find your rhythm.
